Why it matters
The body hook is the punch that makes the level change worth learning. It pairs the dip of the body jab with the turn of the lead hook and shows why the two are taught together.
Walk through it
- GuardClose range, knees soft
- Dip and loadThrough the legs, elbow comes down to rib height
- Turn throughHips turn, fist across, elbow level with the fist, eyes up
- RecoverTurn back and rise, hand to the cheek
Common faults
- Head drops to reachThe eyes stay on the target at the bottom of the dip
- Elbow trailsLevel with the fist; a trailing elbow is a push
- Dip without the turnThe dip loads; the hips deliver
Drill
3 rounds of 2 min, 45 s rest. 6 to 8 slow body hooks a round, pausing at the dip to check the elbow
Solo study: no partner, no contact, not verified by a coach. Rehearse a movement your coach has already shown you.
The movements inside it
- Boxing guard: Set the feet, Hands home, Check balance, Ready. Watch for: Avoid bringing the feet onto one tightrope.
- Lead hook to the body: Guard, Dip and load, Turn through, Recover. Watch for: Dropping the head to reach the body. The eyes stay on the target at the bottom of the dip.

Rehearse, then reflect
Open the visual study to see the movement from four cameras. Start slowly using the movement taught by your coach, pause between repetitions and keep the range comfortable. Add the study to a session when you want a timed block, and record one useful observation afterward.
